A Considered Purchase

Our customers recognise and appreciate the time, skill and care that goes into every part of the design and making process. And like us, they’re prepared to invest in them.

Every piece of furniture has its own unique story around its design inspiration, the human skill and artistry that goes into its making

Our products are not, in general, impulse buys. That’s partly a function of our prices, which are more than you’d pay for something mass-produced, that you’d have to unbox, then unnecessarily fully assemble yourself.

Not that we make any apology for them. Our prices reflect our high-quality materials, the care and craftsmanship that goes into making everything we sell, and our products’ quality, practicality and comfort that means you pay a little more for them, but buy them only once.

The inevitable and obvious corollary of buying furniture that lasts is that you’ll be living with it for many years, and potentially pass on to your loved ones. This fact, as much as any other, probably accounts for the lengthy debates, deliberations and research many of our customers go through before finally making a purchase (and in which we’re only too happy to help and advise as required).

I am merely the custodian of the furniture

What makes the choice more complex and consequential still is that with ercol, you’re looking beyond the physical product itself – it’s about what you’re buying into, not just what you’re buying. Every piece of furniture has its own unique story around its design inspiration, the human skill and artistry that goes into its making, and the variations in the timber, as individual as a human fingerprint, which makes it subtly unlike any other. This adds a significant emotional dimension to the rational and practical considerations. It’s also why so many customers describe this not merely as a purchase, but as an investment, with all the long-term associations that term brings with it.

Of course, our customers also understand that all this time, thought and effort brings rewards. Our timeless designs mean our furniture is immune to the whims of fashion and thus ages elegantly, always remains relevant and never goes out of style. You can therefore buy ercol knowing it will fit not just with the home and décor you have now, but will effortlessly adapt to any future scheme or setting.

They also understand that we continually invest in our products. Although we manufacture at scale, we are far from a fully automated operation — we’re not a car factory with robotic assembly lines. Every piece is still crafted, at least in part, by hand. This makes our process more labour-intensive and adds time — and, as everyone knows, time adds cost.

It takes many hands and many process to make a piece of ercol furniture

The hands behind our furniture belong to specialists who have developed their skills over many years. Their expertise brings extraordinary value, but it is not inexpensive. The result, however, is worth every minute and every touch: meticulous finishing, thorough inspection, and fine detailing that preserve the hand-crafted quality and character of each piece. This attention ensures lasting integrity — furniture made to be used, loved and admired for generations.

We understand that buying ercol is a considered purchase but in our experience, it’s always a well-thought-out decision that goes on to prove a wise one.
